This 'New Amsterdam' hunk has quite a history

NEW AMSTERDAM. Tuesday at 9. Ch. 5.

Memo to all the people who feel like they've spent a lifetime searching for Mr. or Ms. Right: Talk to John Amsterdam.

He has been searching for her since 1642.

The rest of us join his search Tuesday, with the premiere of the Fox cop drama "New Amsterdam." After the opener, its regular night will be Thursday.

John Amsterdam is played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, a hunky guy who vaguely suggests a young Harrison Ford and amazingly, in 366 years, has not picked up a New York accent.

He fits right into a TV season where it seems like you're nobody unless you have superpowers or a supernatural secret.

What Amsterdam has is immortality. Seems that back in 1642, as a Dutch soldier just arrived in the New World, he saved a native woman from being killed by a fellow soldier.

Annoyed, the soldier ran his sword through Amsterdam instead. But the grateful woman saved him and gave him the additional gift of immortality, which he would retain until he found his one true love. At that point, he would become mortal and age through a normal life cycle.

While he was doubtless grateful to her at the time, we get the distinct impression that in the ensuing centuries he has started to wonder just how thoughtful a gift it really was.

Over that time he has seen more bad things than most people would see in, well, five or six lifetimes, and he's tired of it - though that doesn't explain why he chooses to work as a homicide detective, which isn't likely to showcase the happiest parts of life.

When he says things like "Nobody gets to die today," there's a weary, ironic sadness that gives this show a very different tone from anything else on the air.

His new partner, Eva Marquez (Zuleikha Robinson), remarks that his previous partners told her he has a death wish. She takes this to be a metaphorical observation, and he doesn't correct her.

Fortunately, the show's writers realize no one's going to tune in for a suicide watch, so most of his immortality cracks are sly private jokes, like when he tells a date he has had 609 prior girlfriends.

The only living person who knows John's secret is Omar (Stephen Henderson), who owns a jazz club and talks about seeing Monk with Coltrane at the Five Spot in 1957. We like Omar.

And yes, of course there's a strong hint in the premiere that John may be close to finding that one true love who will set him free.

The leading candidate is Dr. Sara Dillane (Alexie Gilmore), a doctor who pronounced him dead in the ER after he had a fatal heart attack that didn't kill him.

What we have in a sense, then, is another boy-girl dance playing off against the tension of lethal crime in New York. But the premise is novel enough that maybe John won't be just tilting at windmills.
